It feels like New England at the Yankee Chef in Milford

When I looked in the distance and saw the sign for the Yankee Chef, I knew that something good was behind those doors. Chef John Sullivan has created a step back in time to all that is good about New England.

After hearing that the Yankee Chef was on Nashua Road in Milford I couldn’t figure out where the restaurant was located. My wife and I were recently down the same road and we couldn’t remember seeing the Yankee Chef. The mystery was solved as we approached a strip mall on the left hand side of the road before you reach the Milford Oval.

We walked in and above in the back you see the words food is love painted on the wall above. Well, who are we to argue with a Yankee Chef? Not I said the visitor from out of town.

Because it was a Sunday morning the place was busy and we put our name on a list for a booth. One of the servers dropped by and asked if anyone would like coffee while they wait. A nice gesture and one that I think more restaurants should offer to their customers. After a little while longer we were seated. Surprisingly, the restaurant was larger than I thought. As I looked around it seemed like everyone knew each other, friends chatting away and stopping by tables to say hello. This is not a flashy place, they have old pictures of Milford sprinkled throughout that adds to their nostalgic feel.

The menu is extensive with the usual cast of breakfast characters including pancakes, French toast, omelets and benedicts along with some specialties. Although we did not sample we did see others enjoying their Yankee French toast that is coated in crushed corn flakes and topped with cinnamon sugar.

My selection was a breakfast wrap filled with scrambled eggs, peppers, onions, black olives and cheese. This was served with salsa and an order of Joe's Potatoes.

The salsa was chunky and worked nicely with the wrap. The Joes potatoes were combined with bacon and onions. This was decent although it could have used a little more seasoning.

When my wife saw the homemade hash on the menu she decided to give it a try so she had it in an omelet.

She enjoyed this very much and agreed that the potatoes needed a little spicing up.

So there you have it, the Yankee Chef is a restaurant you should visit.

For me, somehow it reminds me of the old days visiting my grandparents. They were Yankees to the core and you get the same feeling here. A warm feeling inside about how good things were back in the old days. There were no cell phones, no internet, just good food and friends.
