When Pigs Fly Pizzeria in Kittery, Maine

If pigs could fly and make pizza they would probably land in Kittery, Maine at When Pigs Fly Pizzeria. Having already been familiar with their freshly made breads, I found it curious that they would open a restaurant. So, as we passed by the pizzeria on Route 1 a number of times, we never took the time to sample the goods. I couldn’t help but wonder if this would be more of a tourist trap or a restaurant that served fantastic pizza? Seeming to always have a full parking lot my wife finally said that it was time to give them a try.

We arrived later in the evening to an extremely busy restaurant. You will notice on your way in their gift shop is next door and a large dining room to the right. There is also a porch area that that is where we were seated. The chairs could be a bit softer but I guess you can't expect cushions in a pizza place.

The wood fired pizzas come in a number of different varieties. There are some that they have already named or you can select your own toppings. Choices include meatball, eggplant, Italian sausage, mushrooms or chicken and bacon. If you are looking for something besides pizza they also have sandwiches, medium plates, raw bar, salads and snacks but I think for most pizza should be your choice.

Our selection was the asparagus and spinach pizza:

We replaced the tomato pesto with their standard sauce and this also had onions and fontina cheese. A thin crispy crust with just the right amount of toppings. I did have my doubts at first but the pizza speaks for itself in terms of its bold taste.

A good pizza needs fries and no surprise that we ordered some.

These were hand cut Belgian served with ketchup, Dijon aioli and spicy mayo for dipping. The additional sauces instead of just ketchup certainly added flavor to these already delicious fries.

And no meal is complete without dessert and our pick was the brownie sundae.

My wife deemed this one of the best desserts she has had in a long time. A rich homemade brownie was topped with s’mores ice cream and drizzled with chocolate and caramel sauces. It was fantastic!

We were both pleasantly surprised by how good the whole meal was at When Pigs Fly Pizzeria. They have put together a respectable restaurant that we believe any visitor or local will enjoy.
