You should pop in at Popovers in Epping, New Hampshire

Located half way between Manchester and Portsmouth sits the town of Epping. The opening of Brickyard Square a few years ago has brought a number of new stores and eating establishments to the area. We have stopped here on a few occasions and the new Popovers has been on our list to try. The Portsmouth location has been a local favorite for years with their fresh baked goods, sandwiches and salads and now we embark on a visit to their newest spot.

The restaurant is located at the end on a corner just before you reach the movie theatre. Since they have set up outdoor seating, we decided to sit there on this beautiful summer day. There was live music playing that was a pleasant accompaniment to the evening’s meal. Despite the fact that this overlooks a parking lot we did not mind at all.

My wife and I were not overly hungry and looking for something light so this seemed like the perfect choice. Their Epping cafe is set up differently from Portsmouth which is self service. Apparently, this model was tried when the store first opened but it didn't work because customers ended up standing too long. Once they got their food they had no place to sit, not the best situation. Then earlier this year they became a full table service restaurant and this seemed to resolve the issue.

My wife does like her girly drinks and chose a white Sangria.

True to their name, our waitress brought out a popover to get our meal off to a great start.

We are big fans of popovers so we were happy to taste test this one. Accompanied by some maple butter, we found it to be tasty. My wife still prefers the popovers from the Jordan Pond House but this was good.

My selection from their small plates options was the vegetable & Swiss quiche.

Nicely browned this was served with a popover along with a garden salad.

My wife chose the stir fry and added chicken.

The flavor was good with a slight terryaki taste and the vegetables were cooked al dente. Since the portion was good sized and after filling up on the popover, she took the rest home for another meal.

The service was wonderful in the beginning. Our waitress couldn’t have been nicer. Because we hadn’t been to this particular location before, we had some questions for her. Sensing that she was getting annoyed I tried to end the conversation and then she snapped "I've got a lot of tables inside". We were a bit in shock and she may have been joking but that is something that should never be said to a customer. If you are overwhelmed that is the time to go to your manager. We remind all servers to avoid comments that may be off putting to your patrons.

Overall we think Popovers is a good choice for those in the Epping area or anyone driving on 101 and passing through town. You should definitely pop in to Popovers.
