Road Trip: Eat Cake, Newburyport, Massachusetts

{Editors Note: Unfortunately Eat Cake has closed but don't let that keep you from visiting the beautiful town of Newburyport.}

One of our favorite destinations is the small seaside town of Newburyport, Massachusetts. The town is charming – from the stately colonial era houses to the adorable downtown boutiques there is something for everyone and people come to visit in droves. It is our dream to live here someday but the real estate is very pricey so we settle for road trips to Newburyport. Although this is a small town there is a nice mix of restaurants and a bakery specializing in delicious cupcakes.

We first visited Eat Cake several years ago when they were located in the basement of an old building on a side street away from the busy downtown area. While the cupcakes were very tasty the bakery seemed to be suffering from a lack of publicity. Well, things are looking up since they’ve appeared on the Food Network’s Cupcake Wars and they were voted one of the best by Northshore Magazine.

When we were in Newburyport recently and didn't see Eat Cake at their previous location we feared the worst and wondered if they had gone out of business. With a sense of relief we found them in their new home located at 6 Inn Street. This area has a lot more foot traffic and closer to the busy waterfront. Naturally we had to stop in and sample some of their cupcakes:

If you guessed these were fabulous then you’re right!

Pictured below from top left are lemon raspberry, chocolate oreo, peanut butter cup, and key lime pie.

Here are a few suggestions for things to do in the area:

Walk down to the water and relax on one of the benches and people watch. There are usually live musicians ready to entertain.

Check out the many cute boutiques and restaurants in downtown.

It few estimated times from towns and cities:

Portland, ME about 1 hour and 30 minutes or 72 miles

Keene, NH about 2 hours and 15 minutes or 111 miles

Providence, RI about 1 hour 53 minutes or 101 miles
