Top Dog and the Hidden Gem of Rockport, Massachusetts

With Memorial Day right around the corner there may be people out there trying to think of what to do this upcoming holiday weekend. We have plenty of road trips for you to choose from our Time for a Road Trip series and now we are going to add one of our favorites to the list.

Those of you who read this blog know that we love a really good grilled hot dog and you can find some of the best at Sullivan’s at Castle Island. Now we have found another great place and that is Top Dog in Rockport, Massachusetts. Rockport is one of those beautiful small New England towns with plenty of small shops and amazing views of the ocean.

At Top Dog the hot dogs are all aptly named after man’s best friend and you can get them a million different ways. Grilled or steamed with options like sauerkraut, baked beans and mac & cheese.

Since we both believe that bacon should be another food group, my wife and I got the Bad Dog.

In addition to the bacon, this was slathered in cheese and onions.

How about some fries to go with that?

And now one of the best kept secrets of Rockport. A few years ago while visiting one of the shops a very nice employee told us about an area off a path in the woods that we should go and visit. It is a good place for a picnic and there are also has a couple of benches out on the rocks. This is known as the Headlands and if you don't mind a short walk you should definitely check it out.

I am going to do my best to tell you how to get there. From the center of town, if you are facing the ocean turn right and start walking down Main Street. Continue on until you come to a road on your left and this is Atlantic Avenue. Start walking down Atlantic on the left side and be very careful to stay off to the side of the road watching for cars as you go. After a short 1/4 mile walk the road turns to the right. At this point you should see the path below that leads to the Headlands.

Follow the path until you reach the Headlines. Since pictures speak louder than words:

As far as things to do, we recommend visiting the cute shops that line the streets of Rockport.
