Road Trip: Lexie's on State, Newburyport, MA

If you are a New Englander, you know how difficult the winters can be around here. We don’t ski, snowshoe or snowboard and it can be difficult to find something to do on weekends. Coupled on to that are the snowy and icy roads and we have to pick our spots to make sure that we aren't driving in dangerous conditions. But on those days when the only element we have to deal with is the cold air, our thoughts turn back to food and looking forward to trying a new food destination.

On Saturday with wind chills below zero my wife decided that she might want to visit Lexie's on State in Newburyport. This is the newest location for the small hamburger chain that also has spots in Portsmouth and in the nicer weather Lexie's Landing in Newington, NH. So for those of you looking for something to do during the winter it’s time for another road trip to the North Shore for some great hamburgers!

To say this is a joint is an understatement. They have a few sit down tables and a long bar without a lot of extra frills. The food is cooked upstairs and then brought down to the guests who all stare at it longingly hoping to see their food on the way down.

My selection was the Bacon Me Crazy and it was crazy good! Served with BBQ sauce, American cheese, pickles, and bacon, I would order this again.

My wife ordered their Instant Classic only after inquiring about the hush sauce listed under the description. If you are wondering this is something like a thousand island dressing. It was also served with cheddar cheese, lettuce, pickles and grilled onions. She deemed it delicious.

Nothing goes better with a burger than hand cut fries. Again, you can choose to order a side of plain fries or you can upgrade from a variety of specialty options. We went with the Hobbs fries which consisted of bacon, ranch dressing, bbq sauce, and shredded parmesan cheese.

Because it was so cold we didn't have time to walk around much but if you are in the mood for something sweet then bundle up and walk to the middle of town. On Inn Street you will find Eat Cake and their glorious cupcakes so stop in for one or a dozen.
